Ik had al een hoezenquiz, dus het werd hoog tijd voor een songtekst quiz. Omdat er bij het pubquizzen af en toe wordt gevraagd naar een songtekst, maar ook omdat op de meest vreemde momenten een tekstfragment in me op wil komen. En dan denk ik weer 'eigenlijk een mooie tekst, die zou wat meer aandacht verdienen.' En er zijn die teksten die te stupide voor woorden zijn. Die enkel zijn bedacht om bijvoorbeeld 'ghost' op 'most' en 'toast' (een ultiem dieptepunt) te laten rijmen. Kortom, een mooie aanleiding om een quizje samen te stellen. De selectie is, naast de aandacht voor de mooie en minder mooie rijmelarij, vrij arbitrair; het zijn voor het overgrote deel hits of anderszins popklassiekers. De oudste zijn uit de jaren zestig, de nieuwste zijn uit de jaren nul. En omdat het flauw zou zijn om alleen Engelstalige hits te nemen, heb ik er ook wat Nederlandstalige meuk bij gezet én er zijn wat hits in het Duits en Frans. Dus zowaar ook nog interessant om je talenkennis op peil te houden.
Bij de uitvoerende artiest gaat het telkens om de bekendste uitvoering (en zo kan het dus voorkomen dat een bepaalde tekstschrijver meer dan één keer voorkomt).

Noot: je vraagt je toch oprecht af wat sommige tekstschrijvers heeft bezield. Om Sade kan je nog lachen als ze denkt dat Amerika ophoudt bij Chicago, maar die tekst van Shakira's Whenever Wherever is tenenkrommend. Dat niemand haar even heeft verteld dat dit op z'n zachtst gezegd vreemd is. Of Elton John, die zoveel moois heeft geschreven (en ook Your Song is prachtig), maar die dan met zo'n nietszeggende zin op de proppen komt. Het ultieme dieptepunt vind ik Riders On The Storm van de Doors, een hopeloos staaltje van onzinnige rijmelarij. Op dit soort momenten prijs ik me gelukkig dat ik Nederlandstalig ben en dat het gros van deze Engelstalige teksten langs me heengaat. Je moet er toch niet aan denken heel de dag dit soort onzinnige teksten aan te moeten horen en ook woordelijk te kunnen verstaan? Hoewel. Dan denk ik aan Frank Boeijen, Van Dik Hout of Bløf en ben ik weer genezen. Andersom is het wel knap als een nummer schrijft dat aan één regel te herkennen is. Ik vermoed dat veel mensen de regel 'last night I dreamt of San Pedro' meteen hebben herkend, of anders wel 'shake it like a Polaroid picture.' Als je zo'n zin weet te bedenken, ben je een handige jongen (of meisje).
